Equestrian
Horse riding is considered to be one of the
traditional sports in Kuwait.
Equestrian sport has achieved impressive overseas
success where Kuwait's show-jumpers captured gold,
silver and bronze medals in Asian Games held in India,
and won the fifth Arab Equestrian Championship, which
Kuwait hosted in 1985.
Fishing
With its extensive coastline, water sports and
activities are particularly strong in Kuwait. For fishing, there are fish of every conceivable shape and size in
the waters off Kuwait, including
six different sorts of shark, two types of barracuda,
stinging and non-stinging ray fish, four sorts of
mackerel and tuna, and an array of soles, breams,
snappers, rock and cat fish, flounders, cobias, puffers
and needlefish. Fishing can bee done from the beaches
using sophisticated long casting rods, from
prominent rocks and the ends of piers using simple
poles, lines and hooks or wire baskets to catch fry,
from the water off the beaches using nets held by
several persons or from boats using trawls and
multi-hooked line.
Ice Skating
Kuwait's Olympic Skating Rink offers year round winter
sports action. Tec's Ice Skating Rink is just off the 1st Ring Road at
Shamiya Gate. It has an Olympic size skating floor as
well as a smaller rink. The small rink is often reserved
for women and children, and it many bee rented for
private and corporate parties. Training is
available and there are equipment rental shops.
Sailing
Kuwait is a sailor's paradise so water sports such as
boating, wind-surfing, and jet skiing may be enjoyed off
most beaches. Boast range from small sailing dinghies to
large yachts. The seas off Kuwait are comparatively
clear, and scuba diving is popular with Kuwaitis and
expatriates. Equipment can be hired from diving centers
and commercial establishments, which also organize
diving trips on weekends and public holidays.
Scuba Diving
Despite increasing pollution form the Shatt al-Arab, the
seas off Kuwait are comparatively clear, and scuba
diving is popular. The best locations are off-shore
around Qit'at (Donkey's Reef), Umm al-Maradim and Qaruh
islands in the south and so most trips leave from
Fahaheel or the Khiran Resort area.
Soccer
For many Kuwaitis, soccer or, as they
call it, football, is the most popular sport. It is
the national game of Kuwait. Like many
other Middle East countries, Kuwait has taken to soccer
with a passion. It is played in every school and sport
club in the country. There are over 120 soccer fields in
the country. The fortunes of the national team are
watched with keen interest. The unlimited official and popular
support has led to outstanding success internationally.
The National Soccer Team has achieved remarkable success
at both international and Arab levels.
