Driving in Kuwait
Kuwaiti roads are of good quality and have traffic signs in both Arabic and English. Cars are driven on the left side of the road. A well-developed network of around 2,000 kms of paved roads and expressways links all the towns in the State. Citizens with a GCC driver's licence or travellers using an international driving licence can drive and rent cars.

International driving licences are valid for the same period as the visitor's entry permit. However, international driving licences must be insured with either the Gulf Insurance Company, the Kuwait Insurance Company or Al-Ahliah Insurance Company SAK. This costs approximately KD 2 per month. Local driving licences can be applied for through the Traffic Department of the Police after formalities for a residence visa and work permit have been completed. Applicants who hold a valid driving licence from their country of origin will need the documents like a driving licence, photographs, letter from employer verifying position held in the organization, passport, contract of tenancy, showing applicant's address in Kuwait etc when applying for a local driving licence.

Some nationals, although holding a current driving licence issued in their country of origin, may be required to apply for a learner's licence and pass a driving test in Kuwait before being granted a local driving licence. Some residents, such as Westerners, may obtain a Kuwaiti driving licence on the strength of their national driving licence only.

Kuwaiti driving licences are issued for periods of up to ten years depending on the driver's age. Once the licence runs out, it can be renewed in less than a day at the Traffic Department that originally issued it. Documents required include original and copies of passport and civil ID, old driving licence and three passport-sized photographs. An application form must be typed and submitted. Whether an eye test is required by a driver who does not wear glasses depends on the driver's age.

International Car Certificate is required for cars imported for personal use and for a duration not exceeding three months. Otherwise, a guarantor, or a guarantee of an amount twofold the customs charges due, must be secured.

The Kuwait Automobile and Touring Club (The KT Club) provides valuable service to residents and expatriates alike. These include travel documents such as carnets de passage, international certificates of registration and driving permits. The club also stocks road maps and motor accessories.
